MoveOn.org recommends a substantive way to help people made homeless by Hurricane Katrina: invite them into your spare bedroom. This idea doubles as a yankee/confederate cultural exchange, especially useful to head-in-the-clouds liberals. Although Massachusetts may be a bit too far for a daily commute to New Orleans.

Did you know that I am named after the Mexican woman who invited my Grandparents, newly arrived refugees from the Spanish Civil War, to live in her home while they got settled in their new country? My Grandparents had just spent several grueling months in a putrid refugee camp in France and were in the first ship-load of Spanish refugees to arrive in Mexico's port city of Veracruz. My Mother was named after this generous "stranger" (Maria Victoria Inchaustegui de Arau) as was I. My daughter's middle name is Victoria in her honor, too.
